The better answer is that every layer must be designed around the property, the intended use, and Florida’s heat, sudden downpours, sandy soils, and hurricane-season weather.
Artificial grass does not simply roll out over an existing lawn. A professional installation replaces unstable organic material with a system that supports the turf, manages water, and helps the finished surface stay smooth year after year. That groundwork is what separates a polished, long-lasting lawn, putting green, pet run, or play area from a surface that shifts, puddles, wrinkles, or develops low spots.
What Goes Beneath Artificial Turf?
Most quality artificial turf installations include a prepared subgrade, a compacted aggregate base, drainage measures where needed, and a final leveling layer beneath the turf itself. The exact materials and depths vary. A backyard putting green, for example, needs precise shaping and contours, while a pet area needs exceptional drainage and odor-control planning. A commercial walkway or sports field needs a base built for repeated foot traffic and heavier use.
The goal is consistent across applications: create a firm, permeable, stable surface that allows water to move through instead of collecting under the turf.
Excavation and removal of existing material
Installation starts by removing existing grass, roots, loose soil, mulch, and other organic material. Organic matter breaks down over time, which can leave voids beneath artificial turf. Those voids may lead to uneven areas, sinking edges, and poor drainage.
